Schools and Organisations

Mid-career teachers represent more than half of those leaving our schools every year, and women aged 30-39 are consistently the largest demographic to go.  In fact, in 2023, more than 9,000 women aged 30-39 left – far more than teachers aged 25-29 (that ECT bracket that receives so much media attention) of both genders.

Does motherhood have something to do with it?  Absolutely.  Are the solutions quick and easy? … some of them, but the big shifts in working conditions that will improve the retention rate amongst mother-teachers will boost wellbeing, quality of teaching and learning, and retention across all demographics.

Life Friendly Leadership Programme

Join a powerful cohort of school, MAT and systems leaders determined to bring about real change in their organisations to improve working conditions for parent-teachers.

Over five fortnightly sessions, our Life Friendly Leadership improves your understanding of the impact of the motherhood penalty on our workforce, and the concrete strategies you can use to make things better:

Session 1 – Why “Life Friendly” Leadership?

Session 2 – Expectancy, Parental Leave, and the Return to Work

Session 3 – Inclusive Policies

Session 4 – Professional Development and Parenthood

Session 5 – Supporting Returners

Using real life case studies and the most up to date research, we challenge you to build an action plan to improve working conditions for parent-teachers.

Each fortnight, we’ll provide reading recommendations, podcast episodes and further opportunities to support you to take concrete actions to make transformational change.

Retain staff, improve gender equality, boost teacher wellbeing and – ultimately – improve student outcomes in your school with The MTPT Project’s Life Friendly Leadership programme.

Did you know...?

  • In teaching up to 27% of teachers who take periods of maternity leave do not return, or leave within the first two years of returning
  • Only 38% of teachers returning to work after maternity leave are happy with the support they received from their school
  • The first two years following the return to work are when women are at most risk of attrition

Going Further…

During or following the completion of our Life Friendly Leadership programme, you can take advantage of our Schools Membership package.  Schools Membership includes:

  • Up to 5 1:1 consultation sessions across the year
  • Email communication for troubleshooting and questions
  • Policy templates

  • The use of The MTPT Project logo on your recruitment materials with the wording: “Working to create family-friendly school cultures for our staff with The MTPT Project.”

Supporting Returners

Line managers, in-school HR officers and middle leaders have the greatest input to a member of staff’s return to work experience.

It is for this reason that a recorded version of the fifth session of our Life Friendly Leadership programme is available as a standalone session.

Our aim is that returning teachers are not just empowered by our coaching and Return to Work workshop, but also by informed and supportive cultures in their schools.

Missing Mothers Annual Conference

Our annual online conference is a celebration of The MTPT Project community and the work we do.  We hope you, your leadership teams and staff can join us!
