The English Association offers 1:1 coaching to its members to support them over the parental leave and return to work period.
Since January 2025, The English Association has partnered with The MTPT Project to increase funded coaching opportunities for their 2,000 members. Beginning with sponsored places on our Sustain and Grow group coaching programme, The English Association are now offering a limited number of 1:1 coaching places to English specialists over the parental leave and return to work period.
67 of the 293 parents who have completed a programme of 1:1 coaching with The MTPT Project since 2019 have been English teachers – almost a quarter of our total participants! This may be no surprise as Founder Emma Sheppard is an English teacher, and we count a number of influential colleagues in our MTPT Project alumni, including Jennifer Webb and Kat Howard. Where role models exist, they empower others and connect them to the communities that can support them. The MTPT Project’s West London Representative, Myfanwy Marshall, has even recently been named a fellow of the English Association!
Encouragingly, English is one of the few subjects where DfE recruitment targets are met or exceeded, and these new recruits are overwhelmingly female: 75% of English trainees in 2024 were women, a far higher percentage than comparable subjects like History (52% female).
With high volumes of marking, and the pressure of being a core subject, however, it is currently unclear how many of these English teachers are retained when they become mothers – but we’ve submitted a freedom of information request to find out more!
What is sure, is that with our new coaching partnership, English Association members can now benefit from support to navigate their parenting and teaching journeys. Participants will benefit from four sessions of 1:1 coaching with a qualified and experienced MTPT Project coach during their leave or return to work period, which they can combine with the other group coaching and workshop opportunities included in our Cradle to Career programme of transition support.
If you’re an English teacher, you can become an English Association member for just £55 and then benefit not just from the coaching, but from further CPD opportunities, the English Association’s numerous publications, and a bank of high quality resources.
Are you ready to take advantage of one of these limited coaching spaces? You can complete this simple Google Form directly, and choose The English Association as your funder. We’ll be in touch to match you with your coach and support you through your parental leave or return to work!
