State school teachers, leaders and support staff in Croydon schools can now access a block of four 1:1 coaching sessions up to when their youngest child is five years old.

A new partnership between The MTPT Project and Croydon Education Partnership is providing even more support for colleagues with children in this London Borough.

Croydon Education Partnership have committed to funding 10 1:1 coaching places with The MTPT Project between 2025 and 2027 as part of our “Cradle to Classroom” programme of parental transition support.

This coaching is for teachers, leaders or support staff working in an independent or state school, academy, FE or nursery setting in Croydon.  Colleagues can access one block of coaching from the start of their maternity, adoption or shared parental leave, all the way up to when their youngest child is five years old.  The coaching is available to all parents who have taken a period of extended leave, including fathers and non-birthing partners.

This brilliant offer is Croydon Education Partnership’s response to The MTPT Project and New Britain Project’s 2024 Missing Mothers report, which called for, Comprehensive coaching for mothers returning to work Implement coaching for mothers during and post-maternity leave to support their transition back to work.”  With the retention of experienced teachers (particularly mother-teachers) an ongoing concern across the country, Croydon Education Partnership are responding pro-actively to support more valued colleagues to remain in their education settings.

Across London, the cost of living, distance from extended families and unaffordable childcare lead to a peak in attrition of teachers in their thirties.  A 2018 report from the NFER found that “Staying in London at the point of wanting to settle down and start a family was considered challenging… Housing costs then coupled with the cost of childcare were considered to be the main barriers to remaining in teaching.”

This new fully-funded coaching initiative in Croydon adds to existing fully-funded access to The MTPT Project’s Return to Work workshops and Parental Leave group coaching programmes to provide education staff with a full pathway of support and headspace to navigate these challenges.
